Replace a lens that\s only 4 years old and that no-one asked for, yet ignore the lack of AF-S primes under 200mm?

Truly bizarre.

Quite understandable, considering the Olympics are coming.

Well - IMO from observing the kits of Nikon Sport Shooters, most seem to use the 200-400 in favor of the 300mm. I guess now I know why...it needed a replacement

Well, I have no problem with the update as long as they are updating other lenses at the same time. It looks like they just added VRII and changed some badging so I doubt it was a huge resource commitment from them. And yes, with the Olympics around the corner, it's not a shock by any sense.

The Teleconverter to me is the more interesting part, Nikon's t-cons are not so great from what I've heard, so maybe this new one is a lot better [it has an aspherical element for one] and perhaps the new 300 is optimized to be better with a t-con

$5900 seems a bit steep for a 300 f/2.8 though, Nikon's current is $5300..but Canon's is $4340!

But oh hey look whats on Canonrumors today:

http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/12/b...te-lenses-cr1/

New lens hood design?

Hey look, it makes sense for Canon to mass update its entire collection of supertelephoto primes..the olympics are coming up, We mortals who cant afford such things may scoff but this is a big area of revenue for Canon and well...

And even with a price increase, Canon will likely still be the cheapest...

Very strange upgrade. The Nikon 300 2.8 was already held in extremely high regard, and it's not that old.

So by this logic we'll have new telephoto lenses every four years?
