This shot is pretty bland. You're going to need to tweak the colors to make it interesting.

I like this image. I think it could be improved with a different crop, though.

I would like to see this image with much of the top cropped off, leaving as little above the sun as possible without making it feel too "tight". If some of that sky above needs to remain in order to do this, burn it a little to keep it from looking so "hot". A little of the black foreground could be removed, too. For me, the essence of this image comes from the sun, the trees, and the fog. Everything else is distracting. See what you can do about manipulating the color channels a bit, too - not absolutely necessary but you may find something you like.

Im not sure if thats the perfect solution, others may have better. I just feel like the top half of the photo doesnt add much, and since it is so bright, it actually is a bit distracting.

Check out the rule of thirds. It would also be nice to see something more interesting in there such as a barn, house etc. You've got a lot of nothing going on in the top portion of the photo. Try redoing this when there's more colour in the sky.

I'm posting this with the assumption you are going to allow editing. If that is not the case, let me know and I will remove it.

For this edit, I used LAB mode (which some people like, some people hate), but one thing it is good at is creating color variability when little exists.

For this particular image I converted to LAB mode, created a curves adjustment layer. I moved the sliders on the bottom in to 25/-25 for both a and b channels. I then set the overall layer opacity to between 10-20%.

I created a second curves adjustment layer and clicked around the center of the line and dragged the midtones down until I was happy with the contrast.

... all i got for processing is photoshop 5.5,,, i presume its ok to do this kind of processing?

my only comment on your original is that I think there is too much sky ... everything else works for me

edit:
my only other comment is don't be afraid to let your image size approach 150k bytes. There is some .JPG artifact which is ruining the smoothness of the fog light itself

If you want to really, really post process this, take a look at some of Monet's haystack series. This shot has all the good elements already to start experimenting - btw, less sky for me too; again, study the composition from the haystack composition and watch for proportion between the sky and the rest.
