Default UK Motorsport photogs - communications

I'd be greatful if the mods could leave this here as it is where the target readers turn up.

Having run tests with 446MHz licence free hand-held radios (walkie talkies for the older generation), it seems that the better quality models will cover most UK racing circuits. You can buy a pair for as little as £40.

I would like to suggest that anyone who owns one of these units check on Channel 6 for any other UK Canon motorsport photographers who may be at the circuit the same time as you. It is a great way of contacting other POTN members .

Be aware, some teams use them in the paddock as do some race control centres. Channel 6 seems to be the least used, well until we start using it.

What a great idea!

Just a small note, Iv had some experiance with these, and if you are serious about useing them it pays to stay away from the cheaper ones. While they will have the range, they tend to be terriable power consumers, aset of 3-4 alkaline batteries will often only give you 4-5 hours of on time, and maybe 10-15min of talk/listen time.
It can make them expensive to keep powered.
The more expensive models have thier own rechargable batteries, and will last much longer, as well as being more reliable. They also have better quality speakers, mics, etc etc.

Top idea Kenny! I must admit that I would like to do more motorsport photography....it's more of buzz than anything else I've done.

Perhaps we could have the next POTN branded product....POTN Channel 6 walkie-talkies!

I will be at Oulton Park from dawn to dusk on both days, anywhere from pit lane, grid, trackside to the media centre. Feel free to call me on channel 6.

I use Icom 4088SR's which are at the expensive end of the 446 hand-helds, but I needed something with a degree of weatherproofing. Believe it or not the cheaper models tend to have more features but all I need is reliable point-to-point comms. I have held my Amateur Radio licence for 30 plus years and made my choice on knowing Icom equipment and how well it is built.

Just picked up a cheap set myself, i'll get some spare rechargeable AAA's to overcome any talk-time issues.

Roll on the new season, must meet up with some of POTN's finest this year

I'm just looking into these now ready for when a bunch of us are touring later in the year, would be handy at race meets as well. Keep an ear out for me shouting.
