Do I take my 50mm or 17-85 or even the 10-20mm ? Whats your take on this and YES i did ask the missus if I could take pictures !

17-85 with bounced flash would be my pick

I agree w/ Jason. If you can use flash, I would use the 17-85 and bounce the flash. If you aren't able to use flash, I would use the 50 and raise your iso. Congrats on the new baby. Look forward to seeing the first shots of him.

Just be sure you aren't too focused on taking pictures rather than enjoying the experience!

Exactly... for two reasons:

1 - The birth of your firstborn is not something you want to experience through the viewfinder.

and 2 - If you take too many pictures, or accidently get your wife in the picture, she might kill you (atleast that was the threat made on my life when I went to flash a shot of my wife on the delivery table lol)

I brought my 5d2 and 28mm1.8 and it worked fantastic. There was plenty of light from the overhead lighting. Natural light, if you can swing it, is much better in this spot because you can machine gun the shots when the action gets hectic. I'm always concerned about my flashbecoming a distraction in situations like that.

I had my camera bag and laptop with me. I recognized the nurse that was assisting the doctor from the birth of my first child 7 years ago. She got a big kick out of seeing herself in action back then, and we had a short conversation about Alessi, as she was a Nikon shooter. The 5d2 was just out at the time and she was drooling.

Enjoy the moment, but the photography should be of high priority too. I put together the photos, posted them to Facebook, and emailed them out from our hospital room.

Just come back to this post to read it. I know what you mean about the baby is more important. I talked to my wife and she is happy for me to take photos once the baby is settled in her and mines arms, fair enough !

3 days until due... hope she doesnt go over lol

Thanks.
