Default How did you choose your website name?!

Been thinking of one now for nearly two weeks and i'm getting no where fast. I'm constantly thinking about it, looking at everything for unusual words etc to try help, but nothing.

Anyone got any tips?!

I think it is less a matter of what you want and more a matter of what is actually available.

the domain name that i have is a bit in appropriate...but it's funny to me

it's down right now as I re-vamp it (and I haven't bought a new Mobile Me account oops)

but its youshouldblow.me

Just be creative, look at what ending domains are available and think of something memorable.

It does come down to what's available. After going through numerous choices finding out everyone was taken, I finally came up with one that I was happy with. crossphotographics.com I feel this works great. My name is Doug Cross and I'm a graphic designer and photographer. My website has both my graphic designs and photography so I felt this name reflected that perfectly. Also in the logo it is spelled out as Cross PhotoGraphics with the P being capitalized to show more of a separation.

Doug,
I had a look at your website. You have some nice work.
It seems to cut the bottom of the pictures off.
Any else have this problem?

Thanks. Are the photos getting cut off on the individual photo windows? This is the first I've heard of this happening.

I spent about two hours plugging various combinations into GoDaddy until I got a green light on something I liked that made sense vis a vis what I like to shoot.

So now I own a domain but have yet to do anything with it!

Yes, when I click to enlarge, the bottom of the photo is "cut-off".
Hope you can get that fixed.

Radders, I wasn't referring to your site, good luck picking a name.

I used my own name, which is unique, but violates my personal "rule" that the name should be easy for people to remember & spell correctly.
If there are possible variations of incorrect spelling, you might buy those names, too.

Is there anyway you might be able to send me a screen shot so I can see exactly what you're seeing?

I wanted something photographically related, and came up with about 20 interesting names only to find out on google one by one that a site with that name already existed. I found a glossary of every photography term you can think of, and went through it generating ideas for site names. Finally I landed on 'viewfinder', came up with View Found, couldn't find anything on google using the name, so I went for it. It really does come down to what's available.

I think your domain name should fit into your marketing plan. If your web priority is to rank highly in search engines, then the domain name should use keywords that will help to rank you highly for those terms.

If your marketing strategy is more word of mouth and branding, then it may focus more on whatever brand you choose to create.

You can always create two domains that address each strategy (one easy to remember for WOM, the other for SEO).
