Here's the original ad which has since been removed (Google helped me find a copy):
"Local business needs a part time photographer bi weekly to take photos of our fashion for direct sale to our customers and through e commerce. This is a part time position with flexibility for your schedule. This position is not paid but I will fill out all the necessary paperwork for school credit if you are interested in internship. This also is s a wonderful way to build your portfolio and your creative insight is highly encouraged. You will have the freedom to take our fashion to different locations to convey the artistic impression of your choice. You must have the resources for using proper photography equipment. I have a digital camera, but that does not do justice compared to the quality of photographers equipment of your own or from your school." The replies: "How about you supply me with some of your clothing as an advertisement for them, free of course. I'd be happy to fill out any pertinent forms stating that they came from you. " - - - "We get it- the economy blows. This DOES NOT however, mean that you can get people to WORK for free and call it an internship. You're digital camera isn't good enough? You want professional equipment? Then HIRE a PROFESSIONAL photographer! ie- PAY THEM. And for the record, photos of your product for ecommerce isn't going to do jack for someone's portfolio. Cheap ass. " - - - I love it! ![]()

at LEAST they offered to work with a school.
most of them just want free labor. I have seen "internships" for being a file person.... and accounting... WTF? you can learn everything in school for that. |

A lot of interns in different businesses do not get paid during their internships so that in itself is not a hug surprise. However, expecting the intern to use their own or their schools photography equipment is taking it to far.
Just my opinion though. |

I see these ads a lot on the craigslist in NYC, it's a bunce of crap. I've seen people looking for wedding photographers for 10+hrs at some fancy location and then say they have a tight budget of $200 for the whole night. And to top if off, they want you to send your professional portflio and if they like it, they will hire you! Really, will you do that favor for me?

Something tells me there is product photographers looking to break into the scene and make a name for themselves that will jump all over this...any publicity or a chance to showcase what you can do is good publicity in my eyes. If you can get your name out there as a good photographer, the work will come to you.
Just because it seems dumb, pointless and a waste of time to you, doesnt constitute it as that way for everyone else.
