Question Google street view

I am a bit impressed with google street view. If you haven't seen it. Go to : http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/help/maps/streetview/
My question. is it hard to make any thing like this my self, or has any one tried? My hope is to do this with relative standard equipment.

You are trying to recreate google street view? If so, I would say it would be very difficult, as I don't know any other companies that have even undertaken the project. If you just want 360 pictures, that's not as hard.

Do you have a car? Yes? Good. Do you have 4 or so cameras with wide angle lenses that capture a 360 degree view? Okay, go buy some more. Make a rack that mounts them on the roof. Do you have time to drive around the country, making sure to drive on every street? Yeah? Go wild!

+1 having a way to attach and stitch them all together, and a server or processor capable of storing all those pictures

I believe you could automate Hugin for that purpose. Add a GPS logger/geotagging tool and a lot of harddisks/computing power and you are good to go XD.

Why would you want to? Especially since it's already been done and is free to anyone with an internet connection...

I would like to go places where google hasn't been. One of the places is at my parents summer place. Then i can sit in my chair and watch it all winter long. Another downside of google is that they have blured out peoples faces. I like to see people in my pictures. I was thinking about starting out with 360 deg. pictures at first. I was eventually thinking on placing the tripod on a bicycle or a trolley. I only need distances of around 100-500 yards or so. Ultimately i would also try to use the same method with live filming.
