Default What kind of SD card should I get?

I just got a Canon SD400 and I want to get a 1 gig SD card. But I noticed there is (from many companies but I will just state Scandisk corp.s cards) a normal card and a "faster" card in Scandisk's case its a normal and an Ultra II card. Now the read and write speeds are several times faster in the Ultra II but would I notice or could my camera utilize these faster speeds? or is the Ultra II and others alike just meant for Digital SLRs and not consumer cameras like mine?

Thank you for any and all help, advice, personal stories;
TM

My personal favorites are Scandisk cards and you are correct the faster cards can only be truly utilized by DSLR's. Also welcome to the forum !!

Most P&S camera can't realize the extra speed that Ultra II has to offer. The only time you will see any difference is if you use a USB 2 card reader. And you are correct for most DSLR. The DRebel and earlier cameras like 10D will not realize the extra speed. the max out at almost 2MB/s, where as 20D, 1 series DSLR will go from 5MB/s to about 7MB/s.

If the price isn't much of a difference then The Ultra II will be a good deal. Sandisk and Lexar are consider the best in the business and rely upon by Pros.

I own a ultra II sd card (1gb), compared with a standard sd card it saves my pictures faster so i can take the next picture almost right away. It also improves recording video on my ixus50.

The standard sd card with about 1min video : saving time : 50 seconds.
The ultra II sd card with about 1min video : saving time : 2 seconds

And yes like lostdoggy mentioned, using a cardreader (usb2) improves the speed of copying your pictures.

Also when i want to capture 10 pictures in a row theres about less than 1 sec interval with the ultra II.
I tried to do this with the standard sd card and had about 3-4 sec interval.

Greets.

Around the first of June I bought 2 - 1 GB Toshiba SD cards on sale for $79 each and with a $20 rebate as I recall. So far they've worked very well in my Pentax DSLR.

I have a brand new Delkin High Speed 1GB SD card for sale in the Marketplace forum. Its speed is equal to (or better than) the Sandisk Ultra II cards.

I'm asking $90 shipped (to USA only).

PM me if interested.

For a P&S camera anything over 1 gb memory cards are over kill and take longer to write and read which equals more use of batteries.

I have a 512 mb for mine and it is the perfect amount. It writes fast, reads fast and it holds upto 538 High Res pictures.
