Placed an order for a 7D and the Custom Functions seem to be quite complete - especially compared to my current 30D. I know most are user preferences but is there a place that shows some of the more common settings and ones that have worked well for you? I currently have a few settings I will carry over from my 30D but there are so many more especially in the focusing department.... thanks in advance.

John

Canon has some very good tutorial videos on the functions of the 7D. You can even download them to a CF card and play them on your camera.

It all depends on what your shooting. There is no single best setting. Learn what each one does, and adjust the setting to your subject matter at hand. Shooting indoor basketball is going to require different settings than tracking birds in flight against a blue sky. The tutorial link above will help a lot to understand the AF functions.

1. Enable all the focus modes. I think by default, two of them are not enabled. IIRC, AF zones and AF assist.

2. I use Av mostly, so the aperature control is on the front wheel. When in 'M'anual, it's switched to shutter and the back wheel is aperature which I found annoying. So used the C.Fn to switch the functions.

3. Enable the multipoint controller to select AF points.

I changed a couple of others, but those were the main ones.
