Default Starscapes over a frozen lake

Made my first attempt at shooting starscapes a couple of weekends ago at a friends cabin. No moon so really had to bump the ISO, so a bit more noise than I would like. Both exposures were for 30 seconds. Suggestions more than welcome, hoping to attempt some more this weekend in a different locale.

50D, ISO 1600 F/5.6

50D, ISO 1600 F/5.6
The northern lights were barely visible this night (we couldn't tell if they were clouds at first, but the exposure confirmed that they were)

that's a nice start, have you thought about taking multiple shots and then stacking them? This will cut down on the noise, brighten up the stars and the landscape, and bring out details that you are unable to do with a single exposure. I've tried it a couple of times and the results we much better than I expected!

Very nice ones...I think the suggestion on stacking would make a big difference....
