I love the sharpness and bokeh of my Nikkor 85 mm f1.4 Ai-S lens, the problem is focusing fast enough to capture my 3 month old daughter as she´s moving around. Not many keepers, I must admit, but the IQ on the ones I nail focus on is great. Shot with 500D at f2, natural light through a window (clickable):

Nice shot!
You know you could easily get a Canon 85mm f1.8 for much less than your 85mm AI-s would sell for. That also has excellent bokeh and sharpness, but focuses super fast and accurate on your Canon. Should really help with the keeper rate

Thanks! Yes, I´ve actually thought about exactly that switch from Nikkor to Canon. The amount of money being "much less" for the Canon than the Nikkor is unfortunately not quite true here in Sweden; the Canon costs around 550 USD (equivalent) and the market for MF glass is not quite as big here as in the US...

Well it seems you are getting great results already, so no big deal either way. I find with lenses faster than f2.8, I can't tell what is in focus in the viewfinder very well, but you can easily see it with liveview - especially if you do the 5x zoom to fine tune focus on the eyes. I'd try using liveview when using the manual lenses and you might get better keeper rates.

4 months old now, having her first corn doodle (a cheese doodle without the cheese), shot with a 55 mm micro-Nikkor f2.8 Ai-S with light coming from a window to the left (clickable):
![]() This lens is sharp as a razor, in the fullsize image you can count her eyelashes. Thank Christ for Liveview, makes life much easier when trying to focus a MF lens.

No longer MF, after having bought the Tamron 60mm f/2 1:1 macro. My girl is now 6 months old, eating mashed carrots all by herself (sorry about the horrible light from the popup-flash):
