Default preflash gone

I have now used the G1 for about 10 days. I recall when I first used the flash, there was a preflash that occured after I pressed the shutter 1/2 way. Not the red eye reduction that occurs when the shutter is activated. This does not occur now. Is there a specific setting that I have changed, or is the camera malfunctioning?
Also If I am not dreaming that this was actually a function. I assumed that this was setting the flash exposure prior to taking the picture.

Hi Ted,
The pre-flash doesn't fire when you press the shutter half way...never did as far as I know! The focus assist lamp will fire though as the camera focuses on the scene. The preflash will happen only after you depress the shutter fully...quite fast depending on the available light.

Nahau,

any simple way to use the G1 flash or the 420EX to fire slave flashes that are not meant to accept pre-flashes ? I was looking for a simple electronic schema to either delay, or ignore the pre-flash... wondering also whether the image would be overexposed (the pre-flash won't record the additional lights of the slave flashes).

You will get pre-flash when you press the "*" (AE/AF lock button), not the shutter and of course the flash is on.
