Default 1940s Rusty Firetruck - HDR

I decided to try HDR to bring out the rust on this old firetruck. Three shots bracketed -2, 0, +2. Mild tonemap in Photomatix and mild tweaking in Nik Color Efex.

Wow! Nice set. These look like they are paintings. Nicely done.

That looks like a fairly complete truck. Too bad it's being left to rot away. Someone should restore that or sell it someone that wants to restore it.

What does it look like, evenly exposed without the HDR/ Tone Mapping?

Thank you. It's in the parking lot of a new local winery. I came with the real estate, I don't know what their plans are....but like you say, hopefully it will get restored.

I know HDR is a love / hate thing. I both love and hate it. In this case, it brings out the rust vividly and you can see the front axle, the water pipe under the center, and other details that don't show in the original. Also, in the original, the door looks too light and the rest of the truck too dark...I did play with that first.

What I personally don't care for is the look of the trees in the background in the HDR. If I had enough time, I'd mask out HDR'd truck and blend it into the standard exposure background...

Good idea, & it only takes 10 minutes once you get used to it: Selecting areas in PS.

nice outside shots of it, and not the typical "artsy" shot/shots of the outside that most people do.

HDR Pro in CS5 will let you choose an exposure to use for specific areas, it's so frickin' cool and easy!

Masking isn't one of my skills....yet! I do need to spend some time on it...

^+1 and I also agree that this truck looks like a good candidate to be rescued rather than waste away.

There are a couple little tweaks you can do to mellow the image just a bit. You can bring the black level up just a touch to give the tires a slightly more natural look. And since you have Color EFEX....I added just a touch of Glow to tame the background a bit.....glow 59, saturation -20, temperature -18.....shadows/highlights sliders...shadow about 1/3 from left, highlight full right
