Default My 10 day old newborn :)

This was my first attempt at any newborn photography, and I had the best subject ever, my new little man Braden born on 3/23. Some honest feedback is always appreciated!

It looks like you did great! Congrats on the new one, now you have your own little model to practice with! Such pretty lips! I really love the second one!

Do you mind sharing your processing steps?

I just looked at your Flickr account, I saw other newborn ones so I'm not sure if all of your pictures loaded right, I see a few red "X"'s in the first post. Anyways I LOVE image 3379, lips OMG!

very cute... Congratulations.
There is something odd about the color/contrast... did you pull out some color, or remove some black from the red channel or anything similar?

How lucky you are to have a new baby in the house.. You'll have a blast journaling the first few years and them some.

I think you did awesome for a first attempt! Congratulations on your new little man! He's a doll. Have fun capturing him growing up. It passes too quickly.

These are great! I'm a tad curious if you happened to see my tips for the newborn edits, as Kristy said it does look like you pull a tad too much blacks out of the red channel with a selective color adjustment layer. And it's only really noticeable because the baby's lips look orange rather than pink. The skin looks good though, so it may have been necessary to just mask out the lips a touch.

Nice poses, actually pretty incredible for a first attempt. It's taken me years to try to 'master' these poses (my success still depends on whether the baby wants to or not!) These also look like flash rather than natural light, and props again, you did awesome!

The last one could have used a slightly lower perspective and more fill, but I'm nitpicking!

Thanks for the nice comments! It certainly was a learning experience! He really only wanted to lay one way and peed on 4 of the blankets I tried using!

My PP - yes I did pull out a little bit of the red channel, trying to even out his skin tone and I agree, it may have been a little much. Good thing I shot in RAW and can readjust Aside from that I just did a tad bit of skin smoothing and applied a light warming filter.

I did use a strobe (AB800) to light these, unfortunately my house is way too dark to use only natural light! That is on my wish list for the next house we purchase!

haha.. they always pee on stuff during newborn sessions... at least he is yours ... and you can try again day after day until you get what you want. perfect to have a "live-in" model. hee hee..

I would maybe not pull so much out of the red channel.. just my opinion of course.. but it makes his skin tone see not so alive.. if that makes any sense....

If you don't mind sharing an original, I could play with it and tell you what I'd do with it... but only if you see a need for it. If you are totally in love with them, I'd say leave them alone. We all have different visions, and so it's not anyone's place to try and change on person's artistic viewpoint If htat makes any sense,..

Happy Day! and congrats on your sweet little man.

Thanks so much, I definitely see what you are saying with the skin tone and found myself "overplaying" with them, trying to make it right because they still seemed off to me! Now that I've looked at the original, I'm not sure I pulled red out of this one, but it still has the same cool, orangey color to it, so I'm not sure how to correct that. (I'm a newbie with CS3).

I would love to have you play around with it and see what you come up with. Here is a jpeg copy of the original.
