Default New wishes added to wishlist

Jeff Weisberg mailed me:
----------
I'd like "P mode" to work like "P mode" on my A-2/EOS SLR. In P-mode on my A-2, the camera chooses the shutter speed and aperture (this part is the same as the G-1), but I can then use the main knob to adjust these--turn the knob one way to drop the speed and close the aperture, the other way to increase the speed and open the aperture. I'd like to use P-mode on the G-1 the same way using the left-right arrow buttons.

Also on my A-2, I can have the thumb wheel adjust the exposure bias. I'd be nice to use the up-down buttons on the G-1 for this instead of (in addition to) using the current multi-button process.
----------

Andreas Roeschies mailed me a wish:
----------
Off-Mode where the lens does not slide into the camera, so power-on time could be greatly reduced
----------

The list is at

My number one wish is for smaller apertures than F8: getting the increased DOF of F11 and F16 would be fabulous. I don't know if there is a mechanical limitation or if it's just a matter of a firmware adjustment. Since aperture is varied by an iris, it seems like this could be possible by software.

Would Chromatic Aberration increase with a smaller aperature? I know there could be more refraction as aperature size decreases.

I would like to see true second curtain or slow sync capabilities when the camera is coupled to an EX series speedlight that supports it (i.e. delaying the sync pulse that is sent from the camera)

EDIT:

I have sent the following email to Canon customer support. I'll post the responses as they arrive:

I have a powershot G1 that I purchased in the last few weeks along with a speedlight 420EX. I would like to use the external flash in a second curtain or slow sync mode however the camera only seems to trigger the flash at the beginning of the exposure regardless of the setting.

It would also be *really* nice if the camera would utilise the 420EX's AF assist lamp.

I am using version 1.003 of the G1 firmware.

Another Question: Has Canon ever considered releasing the source code for this (obsolete) camera's firmware to allow the enduser community to create the firmware modifications that we are all clamoring for.

Of the several thousand owners of G1 cameras, a great many are either pro photographers or are avid and skilled hobbyists. Almost all of these prosumer customers would love to see one or more of the features listed below implemented in a new version of the firmware.

There are several shortcomings to this camera which are likely addressable with additions to the firmware. These include but are not limited to the following:

1. Second Curtain flash triggering in Tv mode
2. Utilization of the speedlight AF assist lamp for EX series flashes
3. A flexible P mode where the up and down arrows on the nav button adjust the Av value, and the left/right arrows adjust the Tv value (this functionality already exists on the EOS series SLRs)
4. A user selectable shut down mode where the lens remains extended (for those of us who use the various lens /filter adaptor barrels 100% of the time.
5. A digital zoom feature when using manual focus (this is implemented in the G2) which allows the user to better check focus
6. A display in Manual mode that either emulates an old style exposure indicator from an SLR, or that displays what the program mode estimates the correct exposure would be.

All of these features should be implementable in firmware as none of them require any different hardware than what already exists in the camera.

I would dare say that if offered as a paid firmware upgrade, canon would likely be able to defray the development costs, while regaining some of it's reputation for excellence in the field of digital camera design. I mention this as I know that I am not the only one who has owned a G1 who will have to think long and hard about whether I will choose Canon or Nikon when I am ready to purchase a digital SLR

Please forward this to the Digital Camera product management team.

Best Regards,

Tom Goode

I'd like to rotate the latest taken pictures with one button only. Now you have to go to playback mode to rotate pictures.

Pressing one time -> 90´ right, twice -> 180´ and so on..
