Dear experts, I just took 7 landscape shots using my 35mm Canon camera. I googled to see how I can merge and print them as one panoramic picture but I am still confused. I gave my negatives to be scanned by Kodak picture maker at their highest resolution (might be 16 base but I am not sure, each picture per image size command of Photoshop is about: Pixel dimensions: 21.5M Width: 3360 pixels Height: 2240 pixels Document size: Width: 46.6 inches Height: 33.11 inches Resolution: 72 pixels/inch I want my final print to be 12 X 45 inches. I want to be certain about the quality of the picture before paying for that huge print size. My questions: Is that resolution good enough for the final panoramic print (considering its size)? Or should I scan the negatives again but this time in a higher resolution? If I scan the 4X6 photo prints at 400 dpi and then merge the pictures using photoshop, is that resolution again good enough for that print size? I actually want the picture for my room. No commercial usage. Your input is highly appreciated and thanks for your time in advance. |

Try stitching them together.
Then come back with the results, same info you gave us in regards to the individual images. |

After stitching this is the result: Pixel dimensions: 86.8M Width: 17943 pixels Height: 1691 pixels Document size: Width: 249 inches Height: 23 inches Resolution: 72 pixels/inch After resampling the image to 150 pixels/inch the size became : Width: 119 inches Height: 11 inches which is almost the size that I need. Is it good enough for printing? |

For "Exhibit" display on gloss or semi-gloss photostock - I'd say no. But that is my personal pref. If yoy print it on canvas or watercolor paper, it will look pretty good. Welcome to the wonderfull world of panoramic aspect ratios! If you used the horizontal requirement, 45'', you'd have a 4''±x45'' @ over 300 dpi. More than enough for print. You could use an up-sampling program or do it in PS to get to a dpi of 240 or so. Now that you have done this one and have seen the results, keep playing! |

Thanks UncleDoug. The problem is height of 4" is too small for my room ( my aim is 11") and if I upsamle with PS to reach 240 it seems, there is no other way but to decrease the height. (Sorry but this field is totally new for me) I am not sure if I should give my negatives for a higher resolution scanning? |
