Default Overdone ?

This is an attempt at a slight pseudo-HDR from one RAW. The original isn't all that cheery either... still, wondering if the result is overdone. Also, is it too dark - does it need fill light - or is it OK, I wanted to keep it dark, for the mood, but not too dark for print.

And the original

I like the HDR attempt, the sky looks a bit more threatening. I think the colour diminishes it - there is not enough vibrancy. Try PP as a B&W and playing around with the filters to get a desirable effect. I think it will look great monochrome.
BTW, you are slightly uneven so straighten the water. I would crop a little more water too but that's IMHO

What I was looking for was HDR that doesn't look HDR... if you know what I mean...

the hdr looks like a cartoon. i think hdr was invented as a way to increase the dynamic range of a photo scene not to alter the look to a point where it just looks like someone didnt know what he/she was doing in post processing.

Agree. I was looking through some flicker albums and found these guy that apparently only shoots car events and EVERY single pic was super-extra overdone with this HDR fad....looked terrible. He even offered his services as a photographer....

Lots of people have - in my opinion - missed the point of HDR and instead produce these unrealistic, video game/cartoon-looking photos.

I agree, and that's why I'm not a particular fan of HDR. And frankly I haven't really figured out what you can do with HDR that you can't do with a good GND filter.

I'm just starting to play around with HDR. My reason is that I often encounter scenes that there is such a delta between the shadows and highlights that there is no way to properly expose it without losing detail in either area. I have filters, but if I don't have an easy way to line them up, it doesn't help out at all (i.e. work well for sunset/sunrise with a horizon, but have encountered plenty of landscapes where that wasn't the case). Although, I haven't looked at filters in awhile, so maybe there is something new out there? I only pull out HDR when I can't otherwise get an exposure and I try to make them as realistic as possible.
