Default Total newb - HDR pics

I saw some pictures of eyes that I thought were really cool so I thought I'd give it a shot. This was taken with manual focus with a t2i and kit lens. I used tone mapping on one image via Luminance HDR but am not sure I like all of the colors, specifically the red tinge throughout and the blue pupil.

This next image is a combination of three pictures using automatic bracketing and taken with a t2i and a 2000mm F/10 prime on a tripod. Images processed in Luminance HDR. Subject is 4.5km away. I kind of like the blurred effect on the boat in the background caused by it's movement but I'm not sure if it takes away from the picture or adds to it. I'm sure there's many other things wrong with both of these pics.
Any comments/critique is welcome, thanks!

Congratulations on the first image - it's a sure winner. I dare any first poster to try to beat that image.

The second image is more of a disaster. Whatever moves between the exposures causes serious defects which are a dead giveaway. The flag and the boat in upper left have clearly moved between exposures, and HDR doesn't like that at all.

Love the first HDR, second not really. I feel that once motion is introduced it ruins the HDR.

What kit lens was used for the 1st and how many shots were taken?

Thanks for the comments everyone! The first image is just one image tone mapped in Luminance HDR and I used the 18-55 lens that came with the t2i. Not sure if that technically makes it an HDR or not because I did not use different exposures.
For the second one I think I'll use one image like I did on the first one and tone map it to see how it comes out...

Here's the second try at the second one. Does this have any potential?

I really like the first shot but would rather see the highlights and detail on the skin de-emphasized. Kinda distracting IMO.

Good point, I'll have to try that when I get home tonight. No idea how to do that though so I guess I'll be hitting the books, so to speak.

First one is awesome but the second is only worth keeping to remind you of when you were inexperienced.

Agreed, the first image is great, but the second one doesn't really work. Perhaps the subject matter doesn't really lend itself to HDR? There's a lot of empty blue space. Also, it doesn't help that the boat and flag are moving, though that can be dealt with

Thanks for all the comments folks! I did a "zoom" effect to blur everything outside the center with the intent of making the eye more of the focal point. How's this?

I think your intent in this last offering is commendable, but it fails with me, because I really like the exquisite detail throughout the original of #1.

Yeah, it did get rid of more detail in the eye than I liked which wasn't really what I was going for. The zoom effect I used via Irfanview isn't that great. I think it would be interesting to see a more dramatic zoom effect on everything but the eye. I don't have a program that can do that, anyone care to try?
