My vote would be the 5DII, or for just a few bucks more ...THIS

For nice shallow dof and low light per. Def go for the 5d2. FF will beat crop most of the time.

eg. Premiere Pro can handle R3D files quite easily with 8GB RAM and a decent quad-core. Last edited by benesotor : 23rd of May 2010 (Sun) at 20:09. |

To the OP if you're focused solely on the video aspect then it's really going to boil down to your needs and style of shooting. The 5D2 is superb but it's a royal pain dealing with the very narrow DOF if you're looking to shoot with some fast primes whereas the 7D has a more natural cinema DOF using faster lenses. If you're after that very shallow DOF look and a more centrally focused film style then the 5D2 would suit you but my experience with the 5D2 filming low light was the fast primes proved worthless as I was stopping down to a minimum of f4 to even out the shallow DOF whereas I had more flexibility on the 7D. Now if you're looking for both photos and video that's a bit tougher |

The video we want to make is a Documentary film about endangered birds where we live. It will be mostly interviews with people and B roll of our area. So If I want to get B roll of the birds the 7D is probably superior. I don't think we are going for a cinematic look. We want it to be more cinema verite.
I would also like to get some video's of my buddies skim boarding and skating. The 60 FPS on the 7d will come in handy for that, but the Full Frame of the 5dkII would look cooler when shooting wide. |

The 7d's great but for any action or follow-along (attach the camera to somethin, carry it along or set it down remote) I'd actually urge you to take a look at the GoPro HD Hero cameras. A few friends of mine have been doing surfing videos down in the LA area using two of them attached to their boards in waterproof enclosures and are loving the results. They'll do 60fps as well and the quality is surprisingly quite good.
For interview pieces and capturing the birds yes I would say the 7D will do you well, better get your MF skills ready for those birds though! |

I find the 7D easier for video, probably because it's newer. AF in video mode sucks on all of them. 5D won't give you significantly better image quality, but will give you less DOF and better high ISO. Remember the native camera resolution is down sampled to about 2 mega pixels, and down sampling always reduces noise.

5D Mark II doesn't really rise to the occasion when you're in need of some sports shots!

I would think if the primary purpose of shooting video were interviews, you'd want the interviewee to look sharp and want maximum DOF. |

Check out this video I filmed, I used both 5DII and T2i with a nifty fifty 50mm 1.8. Most the video was with the 5DII up until 8:31- end of video I used the T2i.

This was all with the 5DII, 50mm 1.8, and 24-105mm L. My first time using the 5DII, I shot and edited this video with in 2 hours as a test.
