In an effort to make sure that everyone has a chance to have their images looked at AND commented upon before it slips to page 999, I'd like to purpose that we begin a daily limit of new posts (containing images) per person in the Shared Photo Galleries.
There's so many zero reply posts falling off the first 3-4 pages, I feel really bad for those people if they're new or really trying to get some input. It stinks for anyone who posts an image because they want to share and read a little acknowledgement for their work. There's so much traffic that sometimes it only take a few hours for posts to slip pages back and go unseen. I'm really just looking to do away with all the "here's the 1st pic" and then "here's the 2nd pic" by the same author on the same day, when they could have been combined into one post. I'd rather see 1 post with a dozen images in it, than have to read a dozen posts...or try to reply a dozen times. Maybe with an honor-driven system of a daily limit we can level the playing field for everyone. How about a POLL with something like this? Limit posts per category to 1 per day Limit posts per category to 2 per day No limits Thoughts, comments? Flames will be ignored, of course.

Wait, all that time and all I get is "Cream of the Damn Crop" ?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I think this is a good idea..
A limit to a single posted thread in given catoagories could help a good deal with the "speed" at which threads seem to appear and disapear off of the first page. |

I would have to agree with this.

But what about the dial up users? If you can only post one new topic and then post several pictures within that one thread it would take that much longer for the page to load.
I'm all for a limit, but 1 or 2 per day might be too little.

I think that this is a good idea Lazy. It would be nice to see if we could make this a voluntary restriction.
Hopefully this would also eliminate the threads where the poster puts in several replies to their own original post with more attachments. I voted for two posts per day.

I think 2 per day in each category is plenty. Gosh, I couldn't imagine posting much more than that personally..... Great idea, M

I agree with the spirit of this thread, but how would it ever be implimented? Or is the forum software able to limit a member to one thread per category per day?

I voted leave it as it is.
Because unless this is a function that is already implemented in vBulletin its not going to be possible due to Pekka's policy of not wanting to change code. (I understand that and don't want him to change that policy) So that would leave it completely voluntary with extra work to the moderators to delete / merge threads. And then what about dial up users? They would get more and more trouble seeing photos if all threads start to include 5-6 or more photos. I understand Your thought behind this but this is a positive problem that is caused by the forums success. Yes it means that nobody will be able to see and comment all posts. There are so many photos posted I usually only view in nature and have a set of preferred posters, other posts I will view if the title is either creative or very descriptive. I usually ignore threads like "First post" - except when it is an original title like the one Belmondo created.

Since I'm way to lazy to do it myself I hope someone else wants to....
Has anyone actually done any research here? That is, followed the busiest photo sharing forum, and seen that a lot of people post two threads/24 hours? And a lot of people post more than two/24h? If that doesn't happen more than every once in a while, it doesn't really matter... Personally, I think one post a person per category would do just fine, for petes sakes, post it tomorrow if you have filled your posting ability for the day... Some of those forums fill up so fast that I just enter it, see that it's more than one page full of new posts, check out the first few and then give up. There is just too much traffic I think. So IF there is a few people every day posting more than once, I would like a restriction and see if that makes things better. I mean, if it's not possible in the vbullentin code, just make it a rule and try to make people follow it... |

I have to agree that there's too many posts lately. The other morning I logged in and found 1.5 pages of posts in only 9 hours in Nature & Animals. It's too much for people to follow, and the lack of replies must be disconcerting to some. It's a bummer.
I vote for one post per day, but I don't mind several pics in the post.

I did a quick little survey of just Nature and Animals. There are some that have multiple posts (more than 2) within a 24 hour period and in one case I counted 9 individual posts by the same user.
I agree with Scott, it is probably very disheartening to see your post fall off the first page in a matter of a few hours. Everyone posts here to get some sort of feedback. Given that the moderators all have other lives, well most of them, I don't think it is fair to ask them to police this. We should be able to do this ourselves.

I voted for one post a day in a given category, in spite I have no complaints with feedback personally.
I see many good images pass unnoticed just because either the time of the day was not well chosen or the photographer is not a known member, so I think it will improve visibility for newcomers as well as for not so active members like Don Ellis and lately Damian. These two are just a good example of how good photos are seen only by few people, but there are many others. Even Scottes and CDS have posted wonderful images without the propper "exposure", IMO. But if nothing changes, then all the good people in the forum will have to make an effort to sleep less and see more. I'm already doing some of that... |
