My older son, Ashton, is participating in the Surfer's Healing camp held in Virginia Beach, VA this August.
What I want to know is, the camera/lens I have ... (listed in sig) will they work for good pictures? I'm assuming I"ll have to use my zoom lens as we won't be able to be in the water with him and I want to be able to catch emotion, etc. Any tips/suggestions? I know this is a long ways off but if I really need to consider new lens or anything I want to know now so I can possibly save up/look for used?

Through google I found these pictures from last year...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/surfershealing/ http://gallery.triduo.com/scripts/ex...galleries/27/3 From what I see, it doesn't look like they get too far from shore. Look into renting a 100-400L - you'll have plenty of light to work with so you don't need a really wide/fast aperture... even 400/5.6 will be fine. Looks like they rent for about $50 for 4 days... http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/cano...l-is/for-canon I've got one... great lens. It'll be much better than the 75-300... I had one of those too.

Your gear ought to work just fine. If you have the budget, you might look into the suggestion of renting the ole' 100-400. As long as they're not TOO far out, you'll be able to get some nice catches.
Random boogeyboarder from HI: 400mm, approx 150-250ft out ![]() If you are going to be shooting at many events like this, or get out and shoot other distant subjects this is a really good zoom to consider saving for if it's in your means.

The Sigma 50-500mm "Bigma" is another zoom that gives good reach, especially with lots of light. Big, but easily handholdable. I had a Bigma too. Although I really enjoyed having the 50mm width, I prefer the 100-400L. I suspect you don't want to swap lenses very much at the beach, so 50-500 might be very practical.
There's a new version with OS that is supposedly even better... http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/sigm...m-os/for-canon

+1, that's what I'd do. 300mm might cut it with lots of cropping, you'll be better off with 400-500. |

The break in VA beach is not far out. (300ft at most.) If they are at the jetty you could even walk out on the jetty to get the shots. The 100-400 Should work great. Or you could get an underwater housing and some fins.

100-400 L, 300 L or 400 L (you can also try extenders). And donīt forget a monopod.

So, I had another idea ....
I'm considering hiring a photographer for an hour or so that day, or seeing if anyone wants some experience/portfolio building experience ..... this way I'm not lugging my camera around with me (might still take it with me though, that's just me LOL!) and I can concentrate on my son and his experience rather than taking pictures.... do any of you think I could find someone who'd be willing to help out?

craigslist would be the cheapest, but they might flake. You should probably pay, since surf camp photos won't really build a portfolio.

I shoot with a canon g10 and the standard canon water housing, you could pick up both for around $800
And if you look at my website you will see that this cheap setup does the job http://louisstonephotography.com/ |

Cool pics. Looks like a lot of fun. Saw that camp on the news, it looks like a camp and all the kids looked like they were having a great time.
