I just got my G3 yersterday and was really excited. While charging for the first time, I played around with the camera taking test shots, familiarizing with the menu, etc. Powered off the camera so that it will charge while I took dinner.
After finishing my meal, I decided to play around again with the camera but was not able to power it up, either in record or playback mode. I resorted to removing/reinserting the batteries, and putting the charger back on - and it started powering up again. Fine. One time hang does not hurt. I continued playing around with the camera together with my speedlite flash, playing around with the settings. Got tired and powered down the camera. Woke up again because was excited to play around with the camera and then experienced the "cannot power on hang" again. So, here I go remove/reinstall the batteries again and it worked. Grrr. I was thinking it may have been the batteries not charging, but was able to charge the batteries after 2+ hours until the green LED lit up. Any thoughts or similar experience. Is this a G3 bug or did I just purchase a lemon. Thanks. |

At the bottom of my message I posted what I could find on Canon's web site. If that doesn't help and you're sure you're putting the battery in fully and correctly (the little lock in it's proper position) then you probably want to call Canon's technical support at 800-828-4040. They'll be able to tell you (through their lengthy checklist) whether it's firmware or hardware and whether you need to send it in or exchange it from where it was bought.
Whatever you hear let us know in case we have the same problems. BobbyLee Canon's Support Page On This Subject Says: I cannot get my camera to turn on A "no power" condition is usually the result of a discharged battery, a battery not seated properly, or, depending on the camera model, the battery door not being locked. Ensure that the battery has a full charge. Older rechargeable batteries tend to lose capacity. If you find your battery is not lasting very long, it may no longer be able to hold a charge. See the section in your Camera User's Guide regarding handling and/or charging the battery pack to get the most life out of your battery. If you have a fresh, or freshly charged, battery but the camera still does not turn on, check the contacts on the battery. They should be clean and dry. Clean them with a soft cloth if necessary. Also look into the battery compartment of the camera with a good light to see if the contacts are clean and dry, and that there is no foreign material which may be blocking electrical contact. On many models, there is a latch or lock on the battery door which must be fully seated in the "locked" position (no red showing on the indicator) before the camera will power on. Check the camera in both the shooting mode and replay mode. If it will power on in one mode, but not the other, the problem is not with the battery or power supply. Check that you have a CF card inserted and the door fully closed, that the lens is not obstructed, and that there is no obvious physical damage to any part of the camera. If, at this point, you still cannot get the camera to turn on, the camera needs service. To get service information, please type the word "service" at the search screen. END |

Hallo,
I have had few times similar problem but in different conditions. I realized that it happen to my G3 always when the temperature is below +3 degree Celsius (outside of course Than I cannot power it up (in both modes). I tried to take out the battery and warm it in hand and than it works. Of course it is not comfortable and I am little bit disappointed by this, but pictures from G3 are great. Have fun. Miro |

Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I have been playing with the camera for the whole day and I have not experienced the problem yet. Need to be able to replicate the problem before getting back to Canon or else I'll end up being frustrated being responded to by (modesty aside) not so competent so called technical support. Otherwise, the G3 has been a very fun camera. Sharper than my shots with my Elan7! Will keep everybody posted. Thanks. Benji |
