Is it similar to the pronunciation of "nice"?

I speak a bit of German, and in German when 'i' and 'e' are used together, the sound made is of the latter letter in the pair, so Zeiss is pronounced with the 'i' sound, like Zice

It's pronounced as 'tsice'. .better still, you can hear the correct pronunciation here:

Most people get the first part right, but the 'Z' wrong. It's not 'z' as in zebra but pronounced as 'ts' in German.

No, it's not. The z is pronounced as 'ts'. Listen to the sample.

It's "tsice", but in normal English (American?) fashion, we butcher the pronunciation because we know everything.

Hors d'oeuvre, anyone?

Personally, I use the "z" sound because pronouncing all foreign words properly probably makes me sound like a twit.

Thanks..... I just met my quota of learning something new each day. Tomorrow and the days after, I'll try to learn how to properly pronounce Nikon, bokeh, Leica, Swarovski, etc. :)

German is my mother tongue..

The "Z" is pronounced "TS" with the T being a bit softer than the S..

"EI" is pronounced like "eye".

"SS" is prononced as an elongated "S"..
