All shot with the kit lens. What's the next step up in terms of zoom? I also have a 50 mm (nifty fifty) but the lack of zoom in the club makes it hard to get suitable pictures.

My problem with the 50mm isn't that it's a prime (I do nearly all my zooming with my feet anyway), it's that 50mm is far to narrow for the clubs I go to.

10-20mm, 16-35mm and 18-55mm are popular ranges for club shots. A lot of it will depend on how busy and how big the clubs you go to are.

I think he means all "ambient" light. Which gets the Pod stamp of approval. The less you use flash, the better in my book. The less you use Flash, the better in my other book too. 8)

Shea, here's what I don't get. They gave you drama, but yet, in a lot of your frames, it seems that every wannabe hipster d---hebag blogger/"photographer" was allowed free reign, up to and including being in front of Steve while he was on stage. Can I call foul?

I'll call foul. I hate these guys, they show up at some of the shows I go to but fortunately the promoter I work for doesn't put up with it and boots them off the stage or lets the bouncers know I'm the only person allowed up there. I've talked to a few of them and the only reason most do it, is for the girls. They're nothing but GWC's.

Hit the nail on the head. 50mm isn't wide enough and causes me to shoot from a distance, but the club is normally so packed that there isn't enough space for that. As for ambient lighting, the kit lens does a pretty decent job of doing that, I just need a zoom lens (wide angle preferably) that has a low aperture so I can get more fill light.

Precisely. Like, there's 20 other people crawling around there annoying the patrons with constant photo requests and they decide to make an issue of Shea? I saw Shea in action when he visited here and he was anything but intrusive and annoying.

Haha. Or maybe he openly criticized Dov Charney or spoke ill of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Not at all. I shoot with about that (size-wise) and a lot of the guys on here are mobile versions of B&H when they hit the clubs.

Don't expect to make a fortune though doing it. Unless you're fortunate and hook up with some good clients, you won't be able to live off of club photography exclusively. Safeguard your work and don't sell yourself short. If the clients won't meet your price, they're probably not worth the effort anyways.

Thanks! I know it's not a lucrative thing, but I am just trying to fund more equipment purchases. :)

Oh yeah, totally. You could easily swing a new body or a nice chunk of L glass with a few plum club gigs.

Haha today was my first time looking at this post since I posted it. lol lets see I am always causing some sort of trouble *slight bit of sarcasm*, natural light = ambient light (in my book anyway). The visible hipster in the photos is Tyler Curtis (1/2 of www.darkroomdemons.comexternal link), and some how darkroom demons manage to get away with pretty much what ever they please (not sure how.....jealous). There were probably 6 photographers there, I only saw 2 that probably had a legitimate reason to be shooting there. Thanks for the kind words Pod! I drink a lot of PBR (only because im an alcoholic *sad face* and I'm not paid nearly close to what I think I deserve), I was wearing a pair of shinny silver PF Flyers, as seen in the link shoesexternal link, so I would have thought hipsters would have been in aww..... maybe they were just jealous.... haters. And all of the photos shown were from the 50mm 1.8, I have mixed feelings. I think that covered all everything, if not let me know :)

0o0o0 and my wrist still hurts from the punch.... I sorta regret it only for the fact that it might be strenuous trying to hold my camera this week.
