Default Upgrading Blues

So, I upgraded from the XTi to the 5DmkII; from 3 lenses to 8 lenses; from Lightroom 1 to Lighroom 2; from Scott Kelby's LR 1 book to Martin Evening's LR 2 book; from 0.5 GB memory to 2 GB memory on my iMac.

Now I'm ready for LIghtroom 3, David DuChmein's AND Martin Evening's on LR 3; and, for added measure, actually bought Bento 3 to organize my other stuff.

Some of you probably have already guessed what happened: LR 3 and Bento 3 require OS 10.5.7 (Leopard) or higher and my 4-year old iMac can't run Leopard (or Snow Leopard) and can't be internally upgraded. I need to buy another iMac ($1190)

At work, we're still using WIndows XP. Both of our cars are GM "orphans": Olds and Saturn. I still like to write with a good pencil (Palomino, anyone?). So, screw Steve Jobs (iMac and Bento 3) and Adobe LR 3. This time I won't upgrade, I won't upgrade, I won't upgrade I just cancelled my pre-order for DuChemin's book from Amazon and will send Bento 3 back.

BTW: I thought Apple and Adobe were at each other's throats? It looks like they're in collusion with each other to extract as much money from us as possible.

Thats what you get in Apple world. Lord knows if MS tried to pull that same stunt people would be in the streets screaming monopoly and have Gates hung drawn and quartered.

Yes. Because of course a 4-year old PC with 0.5 gig of RAM (or upgraded to 2 gig, for that matter) would run Windows 7 and LR 3 just fine, right?

No, but a $600 PC would.

I use a 4-year old laptop (2gig) that can run W7, CS5 and Capture One 5 just fine.
And I'm posting from a 5+ year old workstation (upgraded to 2gigs) on XP (for now) that can run CS5, Bridge, Silverfast, Qimage, PhotoAcute and usually some other things on in the background usually at the same time, and it still runs quite responsively.

Would I like a faster PC? hmm maybe, since I can't watch HD movies on it or play games without it slowing to a crawl, but for processing 11262x7488 images it's fine.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera. - someone

Phew!!!

I'm sure glad I didn't upgrade my iMac several weeks ago. Apple just came out with new iMacs. If I succumb to the forces of evil, I can at least get the latest iMac and not the "obsolete" 2009 model

If you're handy with hardware you can build yourself a nice quad-core hackintosh for about $800, sans monitor, and use your current iMac's keyboard and mouse (though I highly recommend the Magic Mouse).

With my vast computer knowledge, I'd probably convert my iMac into a Commodore 64.

Probably, as long as it had the higher RAM spec.

I've got a seven (7) year old PC that still does quite well for photo editing (3GB RAM, 2.4GHz P4-HT).

I even upgraded it to XP (from Win2k) about a month ago.

Just an update.

I did not knuckle under Steve Job's demand to buy a new iMac just so I could use Bento 3 and LR 3.0 I just ordered Bento 2 (for $20) and will stick with LR 2.x as long as I can.

from my list of computer 10 commandments (which is now up to 17):
#9. Never ever buy “the state of the art”:
· the “state” is never stable;
· the “art” is always changing;
· what you get will be out of date by the time you get it working;
· You will have paid top dollar for a system that will not be working right until it is 1-2 years out of date.

Actually it would run Win7 with 2GB of RAM. But since LR3 runs on XP, there would be no reason to upgrade the OS anyway.

When I briefly owned a mac, I discovered that lots of software required the current or 1 previous version of the OS, forcing you to upgrade. Windows programs tend to run on much older versions of Windows. XP is still supported and its almost a decade old now.
