More great stuff, Jeff.

I'd have sworn that your shot of the Graham was from the Gilmore, as even the
background looked right for it. The Nethercutt seems just as impressive, judging
by your shots. If I ever have reason to be in SoCal, I will certainly visit the place.

Here are some of mine. All taken with my brother's Rebel XT and an 18-55 f4.5-5.6. I haven't gotten a chance to go out and take some with my new T1i yet.

fabulous thread
just what im looking for. going to woodvale rally tomorrow at southport, and was wondering how to tackle it. thought close ups would look better than to take full cars, with loads people in the background
any tips on lenses shutter speed f stops etc. will flash gun be of use or not
going to take 5d mk1 and 24-70L 17-40L 70-200 f4L and probably the nifty 50
any tips will be welcome
but for now im going to have a good look at this thread for ideas

I don't normally use a flash, most of the time I'm in good sun and the cars are lit perfectly. I shoot AV with an 18-200mm OS at f/8 for wide shots, and for detail shots I shoot AV with the 100mm IS L macro and shoot it most of the time around f/4. If I want more DOF I shoot around f/8 to f/11. Once you go past f/11 things start to flatten out and your detail won't pop like it should. Seems like for me shooting Aperture Priority the shutter speeds fall into place. If they don't I change ISO up or down a few clicks.

Car shows are great for shots, but suck because you always get either those jerk-offs who won't move (and you just can't shout out "Hey jerk-off, guy with camera here! MOVE!!") or you get other cars in the frame, there's no chance of isolation. Details are different though, you can pretty much go right up to the shot you want and shoot it all day long with no distractions or people in the way. Watch out for chrome though, it'll act like a mirror and pick up things that you might not want to see in the final image. I catch shots of me standing there reflected in the chrome, and most of the time I'd prefer not to be there, so I tend to move around until I'm out of the shot and I still get the shot I want.

Under hoods a flash could be useful for fill light, but I never use one. When I see the shot I want it to look like what I saw, and that means retaining the shadows and whatnot so I keep the flash in the bag.

thanks for that
never thought about the macro lens. may pop that in as well. i got the sigma 105
only problem i dont want to be lugging a heavy full bag around
i may be able to leave stuff in the car and go back for something if i need it, ill have to see how far parking is away from the show when i get there.
im going to keep the 70-200 and 1.4 conv with me, as i believe there are stunt shows and other displays that may need the bigger lens,
might take the 17-40 out though. but then again at 17mm close up can give some unusual views
damn what bag shall i use

I use a Cotton Carrier, so I don't have to worry about lugging all my gear. I just put the Carrier on, throw one, two, or three body/lens combos on and I'm set for the day. I shoot two body/lens combos for car shows, and can go all day long with no problems. As long as my batteries are charged, that is. If they aren't then I might have to make a trip to the car to swap batteries. But I've shot batteries dead too many times, and now I make sure they're all charged before I leave the house.
