Default Used 300mm f4L lens "squeaks" during focus - is it Ok?

I'd like an opinion on a problem I'm seeing with a used lens. There is a noticeable "squeak" when the lens tries to auto focus close, and also if the lens hunts through the near range during auto focus.

This is a used lens from KEH and I need to decide quickly whether to keep the lens and just accept the noise, or if this is a sign of a more serious problem. The condition was advertised as "bargain" so I wasn't expecting perfection, but the squeak has me worried.

Canon says they would have to examine the lens to give me an estimate on repair. I sent email to KEH to see what assistance they can offer.

The lens is a 300mm f/4L (non-is) and otherwise seems to work fine.

Any thoughts on AF squeak?

Thanks!
Doug

Not so much. Send it in to Canon and have it cleaned and relubed and a good ol check under the hood. The last time I heard a lens squeak it was a focus helicoid(I think) and it was jacking up. Soon after the squeak I had no more AF and then no more MF.

But thats just what happened to me.

Any idea what it costs to have Canon fix a lens? Canon wouldn't give me an estimate on the phone.

In this case I paid $600 for the lens, and I could just return it to KEH. If Canon could fix it for, say $100, then perhaps it would be reasonable to repair the lens. But if the cost were $300 then it doesn't seem worth it. Ie, $600 + 300 = $900 for a used 300/4 non-is lens, compared with $1276 for a new 300/4 lens with IS and warranty.

Another possibility: I could ignore the squeak and hope for the best.

Does the lens come with any warranty from KEH? If so, why not see if they will get it repaired?

FYI, I checked with KEH, and they offered to repair the lens. So, yes, they are standing by the product.
