Default Sync cord - 3.5mm mono?

I just hired my clubs studio lights last night, little 200ws ones, but they're still a fair bit better than my portable flashes. They're optical slave, but I don't like having the 580EX on my camera, just because of the weight. The brand is electra, and don't look expensive.

The 20D, the Sekonic L358, and the strobes all have what appears to be a 3.5mm socket (Americans might call it 1/8 inch?), and my headphone plug fits in fine. If I get a straight 5m 3.5mm mono cable will this work ok as a sync cable?

The 20D and the Sekonic L-358 have a standard PC connector, not audio connector sockets. The strobe may have the 3.5mm audio type sockets. My AlienBees strobes use that form of plug to trigger them. The cables supplied with the AlienBees units have a male PC connector on one end and the 3.5mm 2-conductor plug on the other.

My bad, I didn't have time to read all my manuals this morning before dashing to work. So I just need to go to a camera store and get a cable with a PC connector on one end and a 3.5mm audio plug on the other? I don't know if it's worth it for rented lights, especially if I get AlienBees, they come with the right cable (at least I think they do).

What's the 3.5mm plug on the side of the meter for?

According to my manual - pages 1 and 31 - the jack is for an accessory "mini light receptor".
