Hello,
I just bought a 1D Mark IV in April, and am absolutely loving it!!! My wife shoots a 5D Mark II most of the time, well this weekend she grabbed my Mark IV and when she gave it back, she said she wants one too. But, the problem is, we need a full frame camera (we are wedding photogs and need it for low light and wide angle shots.) My question is this: Should I have her just keep the 5D Mark II because of it's high ISO range, or should I get a used 1Ds Mark III, or keep using the 5D Mark II until the 1Ds Mark IV comes out (whenever that is) ? n Be

can you afford a 1DsIV @ $8k when they come out? If not the 1DsIII wins. Also, consider getting her a 1DIV and a sigma 12-24mm for the wides you'd be missing. Slow, but very fun lens that gives you wides on 1.3.

I would stick with the 5DII and wait for a 5DIII. Not sure you would gain anything in terms of IQ or ISO and FOV would be the same between the 5DII and 1DsIII anyway. Now if she shoots moving subjects or action/sports then the 1DsIII would trump the 5dII. I just sold a 1DsII and went to a 7D. The 7 is actually a better fit and I will add a 5DII in a year or so to also have the FF option again which definitely has it's place but a 7D & 5DII combo will be far more practical and useful to me than one 1D body would.

Well if you wait that would give you more time to save for the 1Dsmk4...If you go for the 1Dmk3 right you would pay a higher price then if you waited for the 1Dsmk4 to come out. I would slap a grip on the 5dmk2 and tell her to wait a couple of months to check out the 1Dsmk4 to see if its worth the premium over the 1Dsmk3. If its not get a 1Dsmk3 for $3200-3500 or so.

BTW, what did she like so much about the 1 series that her 5Dii didn't have?

If I save all of this money, I will come real close to the 1Ds Mark IV, I was hoping that it would come out at $7k not $8k though, we will see though.

Which is more important, low ISO performance or high ISO? If the former, the 1DsIII is better, and if the latter, the 5DII.

AND the 40 + selectable AF points that are Cross type and work. She also liked the feel of the portrait grip better than the battery grip on the 5D Mk II, as well as the sound of the shutter (which isn't worth the money I know.) I would really like her to shoot a 1D series, so I can have a SD card backing up in JPG all of the CF cards all day long (I have a 16 GB SD card doing this now on my MK IV.) One thing that I am not sure of, is the High ISO performance of the 1Ds Mk III vs the 5D Mk II.....

People say at ISO 1600; 1dsIII is about the same; but higher than that, the 5DII takes the upper hand.
I will tell you in a few days when I get my 1ds3. If she gets the 1DsIII, she may miss the nice high resolution screen (and fast previews, as I heard the 1Ds3 may be a tad slower). -David

Well right now your 1dmk4 currently beats both the 5d and 1dsmk3 in high ISO(IMO). Im sure the 1dsmk4 isnt going to be lacking in the High ISO at all...It should beat you current 1d. The 5dmk2 has a higher extended iso over the 1dsmk3.

I would suggest renting a 1DS Mk III for a weekend when you're shooting a couple of weddings and have her use it. I totally understand her comment about the grip. It is a huge improvement over the screw-on battery grips. But, it's a much heavier camera, and a couple generations behind, so she may not like it as much as her 5DII once she's lugged it around for 16 or 24 hours.
