Hi all. I have a telephoto lense from a Canon Rebel 2000 EOS (35 mm film SLR). It is the Canon Zoom Lense EF 75-300mm, 1:4-5.6 III, 58mm. Is it possible to use this lense with the G3 with the Canon Conversion Lens adapter, LA-DC58B? Or ... to use it with the Lensmate adapters (which I'd have yet to purchase). And then... if it could be used with the Lensmate, what is the size to get (the 58mm, right?) It is a great lense and cost $250 and works great with the Rebel 2000. It would be great to know that this could be possible. Or do I have to go out and buy the lenses that Canon supplies with their Conversion Adapter? Did Canon make all this compatible?

lenser,
Sorry to disappoint you but your lenses are not suitable for the G3. They are only of use on a Canon DSLR, such as the D10, D30, D60, etc. With the G3, there is no option to take the current lens off the camera and replace it with another lens. What the G3 does allow is to place either a Teleconverter or Wideconverter on the front of the existing lens. The adapter (Canon or Lensmate or other brand) is simply a means of attaching the Teleconverter or Wideconverter, and is just a barrel around the existing lens, offering a screw thread for attaching the converters, or for that matter, threaded filters. There is already a short protection barrel around the lens, but it does not have the thread on the end. It is a bayonet fit to the camera. When the camera is turned on, the lens extends beyond this protection. The optional adapter is long enough to protect the fully extended lens, and has a thread on the end. There are non Canon Teleconverters and and non Canon Wideconverters available for the G3, which tend to have different characteristics to the Canon. Typically, a Teleconvertor will range between x1.5 and x2. I guess a Wideconverter will range between x0.5 and 0.75, but I am only guessing. Regards Bruce |

Ok. Thanks. Does that mean that lenses from any 35 mm film SLR's are not interchangeable with the G3 at all ... you must use the teleconverter and buy the special wide-angle or telephoto lenses designed for the G3?

The only lenses you can use on a powershot G3 are threaded, so if you have a threaded 58mm lens you can use that (you need a lens adapter though.) So you can't use any of the Canon EF lenses.
