Likely you're correct. That would be very distracting.
But just for the sake of argument (as I'm an amateur conductor as well), when working with dancers, very often the orchestra has to time themselves with the dancers as much as the dancer with the orchestra. So it could very well be that he's watching the movement for good reason.

But a great picture nonetheless.
