Default stupid ISO question

i'm under the impression, perhaps erroneously, that shooting with ISO settings between the usual 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 doesn't give any better noise performance than the ISO level directly above. (i.e. 500 or 600 doesn't look any better than 800 since it's not one of the main "incremental" settings and actually derived through some magic in the camera's software)...

can anyone clarify this?
