Is it just me or is the bokeh a little odd?

Is that the FD version? MF only?
The bokeh is a bit distracting compared to the newer model and it lacks a bit of contrast, but in such an extreme focal length, it's very very good!

Photography is about GEAR and not talent or practice. Practice won't make you a better photographer. Expensive equipment will. =D

As a 500mm wide open at 4.5 it is a good lens, damn sharp. I find the bokeh slightly odd, contrast is fine but my processing is not :)

I like the weight of this lens at just 3kg! I hope the 500 IS II will be the same weight as well!

Do you need any special adaptors for this?

FD version requires adaptor, but EF version doesnt.

EF 500 4.5L USM is EF mount, no adaptors required. EF 500 4L IS is just newer version of this, just like old EF 300 2.8L USM and new EF 300 2.8L IS.

It's the predecessor to the EF500 f4L. It's NOT the FD500 f4.5L. So it suits all EOS bodies including 1.6, 1.3 & FF digitals.

And despite the age of these "film era" lenses, they are still very usable on modern DSLR bodies giving extremely good image quality and very fast AF.

I would choose EF 500 4.5L over Sigma 500 4.5..

I had a 500mm 4.5 for years. It was a fine
lens. Wish I still had it.

Mine is a 1999 model by the serial number. So it's no older than the first f4 IS model really.
