Default 100-400 L giving ERR 01 message

My fathers XSi and 100-400 L started giving him the ERR 01 error message in the middle of shooting last night.

Any idea why, or what is wrong?

Clean the contacts on the lens and the body where they connect. 01 is a communication error between the body and the lens.

If the lens wasn't fully locked, this will happen as well. Did this to me once. Also, the note above is valid. A small piece of dirt can break the connection of one contact, and the same error message will appear.

A friend of mine had that problem, it would shoot about 10 shots and throw up the error and not report a aperture, it was the IS unit that was at fault.

If you don't have to pay to send it back I would just send it back. But it may be an easy fix. Put rubbing alcohol on a cloth and wipe the contacts on your lens and body. It might just be that.
