Default First Family Photos - want CC

Hello! I shot my first family this past weekend (for free as I am practicing my new skills). I am very pleased with the lighting and RAW images and had to do very little with the PP. I use Aperture 3 for PP and I am first wondering what you think about this photo and what you think about the effect I put on the second one. The first one is slightly edited. Thanks in advance!

By the way, I used my T1i camera and 50 1.8 lens (at 2.2)

I'll give you a little constructive feedback... First of all, the one on the left isn't bad. The skin tones just seem a bit yellowish to me. I think that one would make a nice shot if you tweaked the skin tones and got them right. I played around in PS with this one and with *VERY* slight color balance adjustments it looked much better. Not only improved skin tones but all the colors in the photo.

The one on the right is overdone. Going so harsh on the contrast turned the trees in the upper left almost solid black and caused them to grab my eyes' attention more than they did in the left image. The contrast boost also really darkened Dad's eye sockets, which doesn't help the photo. Just way too much harsh contrast in this one for me.

Hope these suggestions help you in some way.

No problem. Oh, and if you're here to learn to improve you may want to edit your options on the forum and choose to allow Image Editing (see below my user name to the left of this post). That way people who wish to help can even post examples of your originals with their suggested edits to illustrate their suggestions.

I agree with what was already said. I would personally add a tiny, and I mean tiny, bit more contrast to the first one and I'd be done. Look how dark the mom's dress and the dad's jeans are at the bottom - it really looks strange.

Thank you for letting me know that my image editing was not on "ok" - that is fixed now!

I have played around with the one on the right and reduced the vignette by a lot and it looks much better. And the one on the right looks a lot better when I took some of the yellow/orange out of it and increased the contrast slightly. Thank you very much!
