Flash bracket question

Had a question on flash brackets always being used to the left of the lens.
Wanted to originally post it here, but figured the general lighting forum could provide wider views.

Assuming your question is directed toward those using macro flash brackets, theyre fairly different compared to normal flash brackets and youll get different responses depending on if theyre using it for macro or not.

Thanks, was initially a macro question, but i guess a bracket that could move sideways would be more versatile (I do not like carrying too much equipment in the camera bag).

Have a simple DIY idea that I've been working on, shall post the results soon

Which brackets do folks recommend? I haven't done much macro photography, since back in the film days. Even then, it was mostly copy work.
I have the 430EXII with a diffuser on the way.

Hi Arty - If you're doing a lot of heavy duty work - couple of times a month - weddings, social events, etc, then Newton, Custom, RRS are excellent choices. These are well machined, most tend to be light weight, versatile and have a number of flexible features - but they are quite pricey. Usually they run $275+ when you add in the necessary extras. I own a Newton myself - it's wonderfully compact and performs as advertised.

If you're doing light work that's not too demanding, there are a number of Stroboframe and similar products you can pick up for under $100. These are perfectly fine for casual use.

Most of the time I bounce flash with my 580ex. As far as diffusers go, I use the Lumiquest products on occasion, and sometimes the Stoffen. Most of the time I can achieve what I need simply by bouncing, with he little card extended. Diffusers and light modifiers are fine, but many people misuse them not really understanding their proper working environments. At best they allow you to achieve pleasant lighting effects; at worst they do little to enhance the image and drain your flash batteries. - Stu

Hi Sapearl - I am not a professional and I would like to keep costs down. Are there any specific models that are recommended?

I assume that it needs a flash mounting plate. Any experience with these or similar ones?
I can't justify $275 for an occasional use bracket. I would like to get reasonable quality, but not necessarily professional quality - I just want a bracket to work and help me get macro shots.
I'd hate to lose my flash because of a collapsing bracket.
I also figured I would get the Canon cord.
