Local bike show this weekend. A friend of mine is a bike builder in Philadelphia (Engin Cycles) and he exhibited some of his recent work at the Philly BIke Expo in preparation for the North American Hand Built Show in a few months. I started shooting with flash but got nowhere and realized that my new 5D Mk2 was supposed to do a good job at high ISO (duh!). So I shot natural light in the venue and did some post work. I think it generated some nice images. These images were shot at about ISO 3200 with varying crazy lighting conditions and dynamic range issues.
Previously I shot a 360°x180° pano of his workshop that we ended up getting dye sub printed in black and white at 20 ft by 8 ft on fabric for the exhibit backdrop. It made for a pretty cool backdrop for shots of the magnificent paint on his bikes. This was a great learning experience with respect to what the 5D Mk2 can do. I'd be all over one of those... that orange CX frame looks pretty awesome. And I've been wanting a steel 29er for a while now.

Nice bikes, wish I had a buddy who was a frame builder. Not sure on the colour scheme of pink and brown but don't Foot on have something similar?

Pink and Brown ... well, that's what the customer wanted. The builder tries very hard to walk a line between the paint he would like and the customer's vision of what they would like. That pink and brown gets ridden a lot - you can see the black transfer on the lower edge of the fender.
FYI, here is Engin's website: http://www.engincycles.com if you are interested in his work. Although he has done some one-offs in other material, pretty much everything is steel. I'd like a stem and fork for my aging IF cross bike, but no dice. He only makes stems and forks when you have him build the frame. Kirk |
