Downloaded a trial of this B&W conversion software and had a playabout. I liked the lizard when I first did it, now not so sure - maybe benefit from a bit more contrast?

The owl turned out well, although the contrast could probably be dampened a bit. Some of the white feathers are a little hot, but overall, nice job. I am a little confused why the background is so black when the feathers are more sepia tinted - is that by design or just part of the program?
The lizard photograph is technically converted correctly because you have a nice range of tones. Black and white focuses the attention on texture and composition, so the centered subject and the extremely shallow DoF stand out. When you add that to the odd bubble across his face (lens flare? glass reflection?) it's a bit distracting. The DoF especially makes my eyes hurt. If the lizard photo was mine, I would try again for a different composition.

I have to say I am not a big fan of plugins but Silver Efx is one I use for all my B&W and since they added the tone curve a few versions back it has been great. Nice shots I do think I might dial the contrast back a bit on the owl.

I would have thought there would be more discussion on these. I really like them. It seems like sometimes you need to take a random snapshot of a piece of wood with blinding lens flair to get some feedback. I use both Silver Efex and Color Efex and find them to be really useful at time... Especially Silver Efex

I think the owl shot is perfect. Just get rid of the sepia tone.
(aka- set your saturation to zero)
