First shot is a shameless ripoff of this image (external link). Second is the day I got the bright idea to rent a 400 2.8 for an event. Probably not doing that again.

Why won’t you be renting a 400 again?

Size, weight and weight distribution. Fatigue was an issue 60 min into a 2hr event. Weight is distributed toward the front of the lens making it difficult to balance on a 5D3. One problem I had was the inability to quickly reach the focus limiter switch with my left hand.

Results were better using a monopod but limited by the ball head I had. Checked the camera shops for a tilt head appropriate for the application (Kirk MPA-2 was ideal), nothing to be found. The 498RC2 I have was useless for keeping the lens stable on the horizontal axis. Ended up hand holding as I was losing more shots due to dealing with the head.

Took it birding on day 2. Got a few decent shots. I was painfully aware of the equipment. A 100-400 is transparent in comparison.

Although the IS is effective, tack sharp photos require a monopod. Images from the 400 2.8 are excellent. It's just a beast to use.

The 300 2.8 may be a better option in venues where mobility isn't restricted. 1.5kg lighter, quite a bit smaller, balances better on a 5D3 (w/o grip) and feels better in hand.

So it was more the 400 in general, not necessarily renting it. I thought there was something wrong with the act of renting it

Yeah, the lens was an ergonomic challenge to say the least.

Haven't had a bad rental experience to date.

I believe that's just one lens at different view points. Usually a good idea to do when selling a lens or anything really. A photo says a thousand words and, well, many photos speaks volumes about what's being sold.
