I have an oppurtunity to do an even swap, my 24-105L for a 17-55 2.8 ef-s. It is likely a better match to my 7D and will give me that extra stop but I'm torn on trading an L lense for an ef-s. Selling the L is a non starter here as there are always at least 5 on local Craigslist due to people buying them in kits and they go cheap so I wouldn't get enough for it. The 17-55 is highly regarded here, anybody want to talk me in or out of this deal?

With a 7D, I'd take the 17-55mm over the 24-105mm. I say go for it.

Both are great. I would do it only if you find yourself wanting more on the wide end.....like some indoor shooting or wider nature shots. Both lens's are great. I use me 24-105 a little more due to the length...but I will not give up my 17-55 as long as I have a crop camera!

From a "value" perspective, since I am in the market for both of those lenses over the next 6 months, the 17-55 is going for $850+ and the 24-105 $750+ so you are getting economically the better deal. All things being equal such as condition.
However, they are different lenses so personal perspective has to play a role...

build quality on the 17-55 isn't up to par as far as the build quality of the 24-105. plus, if you decide to go full frame in the future, your 24-105 will carry over.
in the end, it depends on what you shoot. 17-55 is a bit wider, and twice as fast. the 24-105 has a better build quality, longer focal length, but only half as fast.

I had the same opportunity a while back and I passed. That being said I think you should go for it. I would have had a big gap in my FLs. An issue you won't have.
While he build quality isn't there, from what I've seen the image quality is. -F

Yes offcourse if portraits/bokeh is your thing!!!!!!!!!
The EF-S has no red ring, but it's a "hidden L", best standardzoom for cropcamera's. Better bokeh, more light, very sharp, dump the 24-105L!!! I had both and sold both (the 17-55 2.8 cause I went to fullframe so nothing to do with quality issues), I sold the 24-105L on my 5D after 6 months, it was a great range, but too much vignetting, f4 not so interesting, less bokeh, just a walkaround lens in good light. The 17-55 2.8 is better for portraits, evening and inside pictures. Also 17mm is more interesting on a crop. If you plan to go fullframe you should keep the 24-105M, but even then you would probably upgrade to the 24-70 2.8L or 28-70 2.8L I think

If it were me, Id trade for sure. When I was making this decision I went to a camera store and tried both initially leaning toward the 24-105. I left the store knowing that I was going to get the 17-55.
Looking at your gear list, you have the top end of the 24-105 covered by three other lenses but have nothing wide... trade.

nope.... an "L" is an "L" for a reason... build quality... optics... weatherproofing... and the dust magnet 17-55 is no L.

I would not trade this for any other lens that is presently in production (including the 24-70L which I also own) and I don't expect to change to full-frame.
I use the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS along with a 70-200mm f/4L IS (on 30D and 40D cameras) and I have no intention of ever being without my 17-55mm. I shoot 90% of my imagery and virtually all of my travel photography with the above two lenses. On a recent trip to China, I shot 2/3 of my imagery with the 17-55mm and about 1/3 with my 70-200mm. I had no need of any other lens... The 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens because of its constant f/2.8 aperture and great IS, makes a very viable low light glass... See my China images shot with the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and the 70-200mm f/4L IS lenses at: http://rpcrowe.smugmug.com/

I was in the same boat. Decided on testing the range of a 17-50 2.8 non vc tamron since it was more affordable at the time. I found myself needing more range, after a year I now have the 24-105 and I can't be happier.
