rjharris actually answered this correctly, a socked beauty dish is a diffuser cover over the dish. The cover kinda looks like a large shower cap.

He/she used an alien bee flash head with a 22 inch beauty dish attached to it. A beauty dish is like a big honking bowl with a reflector in front of the flash tube to reflect the light to the dish so it spreads out a bunch. They put the sock or silver sock over it to soften the light some more. Google them and you'll see what they are.

What type of device did you use when you socked the AB800?
Did you use a light meter on this?
Do you have any other photos from this setup?
Glad you guys liked the shot!

I used an alien Bee High Output Beauty Dish which is a silver 22" dish. I did use the silver light deflector in it as well and I used the provided diffusion sock that comes with this particular product to soften up the light a bit.

I did not use a light meter on this shoot, Because it was in-studio I was able to shoot tethered to my laptop so I checked exposure that way and adjusted settings accordingly, generally I was shooting around f/11, 1/200th of a second, and iso 100.

Here's an image of the setup, note, the YN560 shown on the right side of this image was not used for the shot included before in this thread.

Here's another image from the salon shoot, looking at the image I don't believe a second light was used for rim, I kinda used it half of the time during the shoot so I'm not 100% sure, but I do not see any indication of it in these images.
