canon 40D main dial slipping

Hi i hope some one can help the main dial on my 40d has started to slip, it seems fine first time out but after a short time its very hard to get it to grip and change aperature or any functions under its control.

I dont recall hearing this problem before. Perhaps there is some sort of cog arrangement behind it and it has stripped. Sounds like a trip to the service centre though.

thanks anyway, i think its the rubber outer part of thr control as it will move in one direction some times
