I shot this image very quickly and have no idea what in the world to make it come out with this strange halo effect. Can anyone help me out? Is this just a product of a fairly slow shutter speed (1/20) and a flash? Does it have anything to do with 1st vs 2nd curtain flash? I find it interesting that there is no ghosting in the center of the frame where the focal point in but seems to increase radially.

Thanks for any help someone could provide.

it's the product of long exposure + short flash -- everything in the "flash" is sharp but the rest of the exposure gets you the halo. The timing of the flash is irrelevant really.
