Default Which 50mm?

My dh has offered to buy me a 50mm lens. I have only looked at the Canon lenses, but I am wondering about other brands.

Opinions please?

ask in the lens section, and you'll get your usual canon vs. sigma debate, 3 pages of it minimum.

If you don't mind 3rd party the Sigma 1.4 us a great lens. Smokes the Canon offerings...even the L some say. I can't say as I don't own th L.

If you are on a budget the Canon 50mm 1.8 is a no brainer.

I would post in the lens section, but how much are you looking to spend?

A Canon 50mm f/1.8 II sneaked out of a bag and onto a camera the other day.

The lens actually worked for taking real pictures, even when the subjects had a hard time standing still.

Seeing the gear list in your sig, I'd go a different route... get the 50 1.8 mk II for $100 and have enough left over to get a used copy of the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or the sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. Unless you have other lenses beyond what you have listed, I think you'll be much happier overall going this route. If you felt like it, you could probably even sell the 28-135 cause you'd have those lengths required.

You'll be amazed how much better shots you get with either of the f/2.8 all puprose zooms over your 28-135... plus 28mm on a 50D crop sensor is not very wide at all so you don't have anything even remotely wide angle.

Elogical, that is a great idea. I do have an old 22mm. A kit lense from a 90s eos. Maybe I'll sell the old ones and save a tamron. I already bought the 50mm I became so overwhelmed when I started looking and my dh wanted to buy the lense for a project this week.

I'm an OEM lens guy unless there's an overriding reason to buy off-brand. I've seen non-Canon lenses give an ERR on the camera with a new firmware update when a Canon lens won't. Rememer Canon is only concerned that THEIR lenses and flashes work with their bodies, not anyone else's.

I had one and it was horrible - couldn't really used it and ended up with a used Contax Zeiss for $150.

OP - if you can afford it - go up to the 1.4...

From personal experience and from reading on here and other sites, I would definitely agree provided you have the money to do it. On a budget, I'd take a f/2.8 tamron over the not as sharp, variable aperture canon alternatives any day, however, for the same price. There's certainly more risk buying 3rd party lenses, but you just have to shop smart. Some lenses have a spotted record and some are near perfect. Judging by reviews and comments online, you can tell pretty quickly which lenses have problems. People spending hundreds on a lens won't hesitate to comment if they have issues and we get to benefit from the feedback.

I don't mean that to dispute what you said, just saying that they're still worth considering when you're looking for results on a limited budget and are willing to take a very slight risk to hopefully end up with a much nicer lens.
