My dh has offered to buy me a 50mm lens. I have only looked at the Canon lenses, but I am wondering about other brands.
Opinions please?

If you are on a budget the Canon 50mm 1.8 is a no brainer.

I would post in the lens section, but how much are you looking to spend?

A Canon 50mm f/1.8 II sneaked out of a bag and onto a camera the other day.
![]() ![]() The lens actually worked for taking real pictures, even when the subjects had a hard time standing still. |

Seeing the gear list in your sig, I'd go a different route... get the 50 1.8 mk II for $100 and have enough left over to get a used copy of the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or the sigma 18-50mm f/2.8. Unless you have other lenses beyond what you have listed, I think you'll be much happier overall going this route. If you felt like it, you could probably even sell the 28-135 cause you'd have those lengths required.
You'll be amazed how much better shots you get with either of the f/2.8 all puprose zooms over your 28-135... plus 28mm on a 50D crop sensor is not very wide at all so you don't have anything even remotely wide angle.

Elogical, that is a great idea. I do have an old 22mm. A kit lense from a 90s eos. Maybe I'll sell the old ones and save a tamron. I already bought the 50mm I became so overwhelmed when I started looking and my dh wanted to buy the lense for a project this week.

I'm an OEM lens guy unless there's an overriding reason to buy off-brand. I've seen non-Canon lenses give an ERR on the camera with a new firmware update when a Canon lens won't. Rememer Canon is only concerned that THEIR lenses and flashes work with their bodies, not anyone else's.

I had one and it was horrible - couldn't really used it and ended up with a used Contax Zeiss for $150.
OP - if you can afford it - go up to the 1.4... http://www.the-digital-picture.com/R...ample-Pictures |

I don't mean that to dispute what you said, just saying that they're still worth considering when you're looking for results on a limited budget and are willing to take a very slight risk to hopefully end up with a much nicer lens.
