I took the pic of this beautiful hawk yesterday while traveling on the 27-mile long Loop Road in the Big Cypress National Preserve. For some reason, I always have a problem identifying the difference between Red-Tailed and Red-Shouldered Hawks. Any help identifying this one would be greatly appreciated. At the same time, though, please educate me and tell me what the distinguishing factor is that I need to look for.

Thank you and enjoy!

To me it looks like a Red-shouldered Florida Adult but I stand to be corrected. Nice catch.

Can't help you with the species, as I've never seen one of those, but wow, beautiful! Great capture!

I would say definitely a Red-shouldered and a great shot of it.

I agree with all of the above ID's. Also, the legs and feet are much more massive on the red tailed hawk.

Thanks for the tip, Bill! This gives me something to look for when comparing shots.
