I am no expert in this but since you need critique ...
... I try to provide you some. I skip the positive things (it is meant to be a critique, no?): 1. You state in your sig "Man with a Camera and Lens", However, I have the impression that this picture has been taken with flash, right? I htink this is why the color renders a little blueish, it might as well come from the overcast sky (or my computer screen). Anyway, I would like it to be a tad warmer. 2. Pose of your subjects: without knowing what you aim to express this point is difficult to critique. What I see is a rather severe expression in the woman's (mother's) face holding back the boy, who eventually did not like posing for the picture. It captures a moment of discordance between the to, at least, this is how i see it. Hope this is kinda what you expected. Just my 2 cents |

No,no...you did great, it's exactly what I expected...Thank You...
I actually thought it was warm enough, and the reason the lil' boy is being held up is because my son is Autistic, and doesn't have great balance, especially in the sand.... But that was good, haiko, thanks.

I would have liked to see more space (sand) on the bottom than the top (sky) Other than that - like it the way it is. The lighting is good but perhaps haiko is right - bit warmer.
I don't read a thing into the expressions. |

I think there's a hundred things you could have done differently to change the framing, look, position, etc and each would have had their own advantages and disadvantages. The shot you posted is really good. Your wife (I'm assuming) looks very strong (in a good way) and confident. The lighting and pose definitely accentuate her curves.
Your son doesn't actually look like he's being held up, just that your wife is trying to keep a typical boy from running around so you could take a photo. The background is exposed perfectly, the subjects are exposed perfectly, and, amazingly enough for any kid but especially for an autistic one, he's looking at the camera. If anything I'd crop a bit from the top, but that's not really important.

Yeah, placement of the flash was not that great, plus it was a bare flash at that, leaving the shadows...thanks for the critique...

It's good that you used fill flash. It really balances out the dynamic range and emphasizes the subject. My only nit pick is the flash shadow on her right arm.

Agree about the suggestion that they sit down, that way we could see interaction between the two, I bet your son loves the sand in his hand
