I'm hoping someone can answer this question for me. I have been fiddling around with the aperture to focus on a closer object so that everything in the background and further distance is blury. It's working great except for when I try to use the self timer and step into the shot. It just keeps everything in focus. It doesn't seem to focus on me or the object alone. I've tested this i.e. I put the self timer on and THEN put an object within the frame and then everything goes into focus. but when I use the self timer on something that is already within the frame the effect works perfectly (object is in focus while everything else is blury). Is there a way to get this effect if the object (like myself) steps into the frame after I've set the timer to go

Try using manual focus.

+1. In my (limited) experience with the G12, the only way you'll get a blurred background of any sort in the vast majority of situations is to use manual focus.

... and the background won't be particularly out of focus unless it is very far away in comparison to the subject.

I dont know for sure if this is you answer, but I purchased one of those cheap "Aputure" wireless remotes that works great for remote shooting. You can then step in when you like and use the remote to get focus confirm and then fire just like you were standing behind it with your finger on the shutter button.
Its on sale too! http://cgi.ebay.com/Aputure-Coworker...item53dca6c13e |

does that gizmo work with the G12? Or only on DSLR's.
I'd be interested in one if it does for bird photos. Hopefully I'd get more than a glorified perch for the little fella's |

Now sir you dont think I would recommend it if it didnt work on the G12?
That is why I linked to the particular model that I posted the URL too because that is the one I am using on my G12 It should work great for birding. It can be used without the wireless remote for wired remote use, though the cable is pretty short. You can buy or make a longer cable for it though. I used this same remote on my 1D Mark III with a different cable, and made a 25 foot extension cord for that one. |

I suppose thats what happens when a 'Member' queries a 'Senior Member'
I did assume that was the case thanks, but wanted to make sure as I am just sending some other Canon gear back that was bought in good faith only to find it doesn't fit as well as it should and one doesn't fit at all for my G12 and S3. I looked down that linked page and not seeing a mention of G12 decided to come back with my query. |

stephyvic can you do what you descibe but replace 'the object' with your self?
Ie, focus on something where you will stand, press the shutter button and hold after it focus's, then shift (if needed) the camera (point to) where you will stand and then move quickly. I have done this with focusing on close items with success. You may have to watch the exposure and fiddle with that by under/over compensating. I don't use Auto - prefer AV. |

Avon and master thanks so much for your help!
I'll try putting a "model" object as myself before stepping into the frame and see if that works. I had this idea in mind as well. It would be a temporary solution. And this switch sounds like a great idea! I'll definitely buy one. I guess there is no way to do it other than those two options. I've tried with manual focus thanks again guys! |

a blurry background is not working with a compact camera when you make a portret
because the sensor is to small.(it's not working with compact camera's) you need a DSLR or a camera with a bigger sensor and a lens with a aperture of 2.8 only in macro mode it works. leon |
