Wow, those ISO comparisons are remarkable.

Looks good. Without knowing the specifics of the side by side, it's difficult to judge. Was the D800 down sampled to 12MP or are these 100% crops? Who knows.

Certainly, the D800 does seem to have at least a stop on the D700. Pretty impressive for a 36MP camera!

Unless you plan on keeping the D7K that would cost you more in the long run.

man, now i want the d800. while not the most accurate comparison. the d700 low mp lovers now have 1 less thing to complain about. i cant wait for the side by side real world comparisons in low light. if the d800 can do just as well, if not better than the d700 in low light, Nikon will be winning converts. 5d3 better have some tricks under its sleeves.

I think the main reason why I like the 36MP is the available 1.5x 16MP and 1.2x 25 MP crop modes. Do that without losing high-iso capabilities and I'm a happy camper.

*Gulp* That's... amazing. The detail retention in the orange can even as ISO skyrockets is ridiculously good. If this is a Sony sensor why can't Sony manage this kind of result in their NEX 7? What kind of special sauce are Nikon adding to the mix?

True but having a shiny new D800 and one single lens to use on it for a long time would also kinda suck...

I dunno, I could probably shoot a wedding with a 50mm... though i'd prefer not to have to try. For casual stuff i'd manage ok, probably with a 24-70. The 24-105 is meant to be decent too.

Would that also include the sell off of the Canon gear first?

Yeh, Pretty much all my canon gear would probubly net me around $4500...

So maybe i could irk out 2 lenses... theres no way i can come close to replicating my coverage without going with a D7000

I'd go from:

7D
28 f/1.8
15-85
Sigma 50mm f/1.4
100L
70-200 f/4L IS

to like...

D800
50 f/1.8G
105VR(or Sigma 150 OS)

or

D7000
35mm f/1.8G
85mm f/1.8G
Sigma 150 OS
70-200 f/2.8 OS

Could manage that maybe... I mean ok in the past i worked with solely a 105 macro to my name for half a year, but i dont wanna go back there!

Of course the dream or ideal system for me would be:

D800
17-35 f/2.8
50mm f/1.8G
85mm f/1.8G
150 OS
70-200 f/2.8 VR II

That's what I'm going with initially. Well two new lenses and my 105 but I have the non-VR version and it cost me half the price. If you can get away with those two lenses for a bit I would do it.
