The 1 series has a CF and an SD slot. You can configure the slots in a couple ways. One you can have the cards shoot identically (RAW on both for example). Or you can have the cards write individually (RAW on one and JPEG on the other). Third you can simply shoot on the first card and when it fills the second card automatically takes over. Also you have the ability to move photos from one card to the other manually.

I sure wish the 7D had included this feature!

1) Critical for some people, you can write every shot to both cards at the same time. This forms an instant backup in the case of a card failure. This matters to people who are shooting events that cannot be recreated and that are important. 2) For convenience, you can write a jpeg to one card and a RAW to the other. Allows a RAW 'backup' if you want it. 3) Also convenient, you can write the image to one card until full and then have the camera swap over automatically. This is nice for sports where you can change out the full card at a time that is convenient (like a timeout or halftime) and not get stuck with a full card in the middle of the action.

As an old film shooter, I cannot for the life of me understand why photographers should have any problems switching CF cards quickly in the field.
After shooting with cut film, and then 120 12-exposure film and then 220 24-exposure loads and also shooting the Leica 35mm systems with their damnable slow an tedious loading process; the ease of switching CF cards doesn't cause me a moment's anxiety.

That said, it doesn't seem that hard to me, but still, one less thing to worry about is one less thing.

I have a Transcend 8GB SD class 10 card in my MK3 that I use as a spare just in case. I have never tried to write to both at the same time but I am pretty sure the write speed on the SD card is a lot slower than writing to the compact flash card (Transcend 400x 16 or 32gb).

I'll tell ya ONE advantage. Some time ago I bought a "broke" Oly E series DSLR and the seller clearly explained to me that the CF card had some bent pins. I bought it anyway, and went out and bought the OTHER type card it takes!!!

I shot using the dual slot setup once with my 1D3 when I decided to try Raw+jpeg for a sporting event (shooting Raw on the CF card, jpeg on the SD card).
It really didn't slow the performance down much, which is the good news. What wasnt fun to me was dealing with 500 Raw shots and 500 jpegs, all together in my Lightroom library. I decided that at least for me I was content with my Raw work, deleted the jpegs, and no more SD cards for me! I personally do just fine switching CF cards when needed, as long as I don't do something silly like leave spare cards behind (which has happened once or twice).

I'm a klutz. The less I have to mess with, the better. That's my reason for big cards though. The dual slot is for backup, not overflow.
