Default Resale--Old 400 f/2.8 When The New Arrives

What do you guys see happening to the market for used Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lenses after the new Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens becomes available?

The market for these lenses has got to be relatively small because of the price, size, and weight. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the top pros will move to the new lens fairly rapidly--IF--the reports of improved performance and lighter weight of the new 400 are true. That could result in a temporary dip in used Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens prices because there will be an oversupply of lenses and an undersupply of buyers for that version.

On the other hand, with the new lens selling for nearly $11,000 that might result in a firming of the prices for the current, now less costly, lens in the longer term.

How do you guys see it?

Phil

I agree with your last line.
Price will also depend on it's condition.
Perhaps I've been asleep but I haven't seen buyers
fighting over a lens missing copious amounts of paint and a
million clicks.

The new version is going to be ~$3500 more than the Mk I. That's a nearly 50% jump. Sure you'll get some of the pros going for it, but because of the limited market, I can't see a big movement in the price of a used Mk I.

I think, if anything, the "worth" (price) of the used ones will go up from present value.

As a professional, if I used the 400 daily or almost every event I would gladly spend the extra $3.5k for a 4 pound savings. I'm sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

As for your question, I'm sure some people will be selling their MK I for less money just to move it. The price is always dependent on the sellers wants and needs.

I agree, the weight savings would be a big deal if it was a lens that I used a lot, and it was making money. I did the same thing several years ago w/ a framing saw. Had one that was ~3 months old, and they came out w/ one w/ a Mg. housing that was 2# lighter. Went out and bought one. Granted, we're not talking anywhere near the same level of expense, but this was a tool (and isn't that what lenses are?) that was used every day, multiple times a day. Picking both versions up, one after the other, the 2# didn't seem like a big difference, and was hardly noticeable. After using the lighter one for 2 weeks and then picking up the heavier one, I noticed it immediately.

Sure, you'll get people that want to move the old ones to help defray the cost of a new one, but these guys know what this stuff is worth, and more than likely, won't be giving it away.

New 400 f/2.8 has a price increase. How does $11,500 sound?

Damn.
